For this exercise I chose simple subjects. I found myself thinking in terms of the qualities in the images that are best suited to black and white. One of the elements that I find comes across strongly on B & W is the graphic element of line. Also I think black and white gives a much greater sense of texture. I find B & W a much more expressive mode of photography.
The light is natural, from a window. I think this shows how well black and white emphasises tone, shape and the graphic elements in a subject. Something that looks less than interesting can look the opposite in monochrome. I was looking for particular subjects that would work well in monochrome, with interesting shapes, curves, lines etc. I show the original version above the black and white version.
